Your first FDM print: a checklist from idea to part
A first print checks the entire chain: assembly, profile, material, bed and first layer. Use a simple file and the official profile for the actual configuration without changing many settings at once.
Prepare the machine and bed
Complete assembly, updates, self-test and calibration according to the model manual. Check that no packaging, ties or obstacles remain around moving parts.
Clean the bed using the method specified for that surface and material. Do not automatically use the same solvent or adhesive on different sheets.
Select the exact profile
In the slicer, choose the actual printer model, variant, nozzle diameter and loaded material. A similar but different profile may use different limits, retraction or temperatures.
For the first attempt, use a known, simple model. Orient it on a stable base; enable supports only where a feature would begin in mid-air and consider a brim when the bed contact is small.
Inspect the preview
After slicing, move through the layers and look for unsupported parts, missing walls, unreachable supports or travel beyond the bed. Check estimated material and duration to catch obvious mistakes.
Save or send the file using the method specified by the machine. Do not use a file prepared for a different printer.
Watch the first layer
Lines should adhere evenly and join without merely resting on the bed or being excessively squashed. If adhesion is uneven, stop and check cleaning, calibration and profile instead of allowing the print to continue.
Maintain appropriate supervision under the manual and do not touch the nozzle, heated bed or moving parts.
Cooling and removal
Wait for the prescribed cooling before removing the part. Flexing a removable sheet or using a tool incorrectly can damage the surface, part or hands.
Keep the profile that worked and record only one change at a time. This makes every test understandable and reversible.
When something goes wrong
- The part will not adhere: check cleaning, profile and first-layer calibration.
- Bubbles or a rough surface appear: check whether the filament absorbed moisture.
- Extrusion is irregular: stop and follow the model procedure for the filament path and nozzle.
- The machine makes unusual sounds: stop and check for obstacles and assembly issues in the manual.
A successful first print does not require extreme settings. It requires a coherent configuration and checks performed in the right order.
